I love music, as you all know by now. If you’re new to the podcast or the blog, let me just tell you.
For weeks now, I have tried to distract everyone from the divisiveness of the world on social media by asking people simple questions about one thing: music.
For weeks now I have been asking people “What was the best song by (insert artist here).”
The responses reminded me that music and our stories are so connected. Most people have a story for the songs they hear. Maybe it’s just one artist. Maybe it’s multiple. Maybe it is a hurt. Maybe it is a sweet moment.
I don’t know about you all but I mark time by songs. In scripture, they built altars around moments. I tie them to a song. When I hear a song, I can tell you a moment. That’s just me but it did lead me to a great personal journey and now I want to share it with you.
One question.
If I have never met you, tell me your story in 5 songs. It doesn’t have to be your five favorite songs, or maybe they are. I believe if you send me 5 songs, I can understand every part of you. Your journey. Your hurt. Your victory. Your hometown. It would open the door for a conversation. Music is the on-ramp. The conversation is the freeway.
That said, to understand me, understand these five songs.
NOTE there are explicit lyrics on the first one but if you’re asking about my 5 songs and my story, here they are. (SKIP THE FIRST ONE IF YOU DON’T WANT TO HEAR EXPLICIT LYRICS)
The 216.
My Need For Justice in everything.
This one is for my bride. She saved me from the first two songs.
I thank God each day that I get to be the dad of three incredible children. I worry that one day they will realize I didn’t hang the moon. I hope that when they do, they know the One that actually does. I’m so thankful they do.
The Man That Hung The Moon
When all is said and done. This song. I already have a friend ready to sing it at my funeral whenever that day comes. This is my prayer. I might have started with an explicit song but I pray that I end it like Geoff Moore describes it.
When all is said and done.
Those are my five songs. If you follow the podcast or the blog, none of that is probably a surprise. If you know me it isn’t either.
It’s your turn. What are your 5 songs that tell your story?
You don’t have to tell me but pass it on.
Tell me your story in 5 songs.
